Sightseeing in Tulsa, Oklahoma
We spent the day driving around the Tulsa area.
After viewing the Blue Whale, we drove straight into Tulsa. Our first location to find was the Metro Diner. This restaurant is an old Route 66 treasure, sporting lots of neon and memorabilia from the road’s most popular era.
We used the GPS to get there and when we arrived…. there were brand new college dorms standing where the restaurant should be. Sad. Turns out that four years ago the college bought out the land to expand. The owners decided to sell and not relocate or rebuild. Apparently, I didn’t do enough modern research when we chose this place as a “must see” location.
But, with the help of the Internet we found the next best place to eat: Tally’s Cafe. This place looked like it was right out of the 40’s and 50’s. Old diner style seating and brushed aluminum walls covered with neon and brightly colored knickknacks. Pretty neat place to be. The food was fantastic. Matt and I ordered burgers, Derek ordered spaghetti (of course!), Sarah ordered fried chicken and Rikki ordered a Philly Cheese. Yum! I confess that I ate off everyone’s plate, except Matt’s – he ate his entire Fat Boy burger!
Lyon’s Indian Store was a pretty cool place to stop, too. There was plenty of local, authentic Indian goods for sale. The owner said that they trade with local Indians to sell their items. I thinks that’s awesome. Wish we had more “trading” instead of “debting” in our culture!
Our last stop was at a huge memorial to one of the oldest Route 66 landmarks in Tulsa: Meadow Gold’s neon sign. The city purchased a corner property and had the sign moved before the building it was on was demolished. The sign now sits on top a really cool structure with lots of informational plaques and Route 66 stories. Pretty neat. Read more about this structure here.

Tell me more about the Blue Whale…story, etc!
We’re in Hardeeville, SC with the Harkleroads. Their 5th wheel is really big. Cotch and Mary Kay are giving up their bed for us, but the couches look pretty comfy. Going to walk on the beach in Hilton Head after breakfast. Then back to the 5th Wheel to cool off, change and off to Savannah. HOT here!
Love to all! Mom and Dad
